“Rosie the Riveter & Beyond: How Women Helped Win WWII” is the first of two presentations in ǿմý’s spring Lifelong Learners educational series.

Presenter Jeannette Gutierrez delves into the many ways women did their part, including war production work, women in the armed forces, volunteer women, and celebrity influencers. We owe so much to Rosie and her sisters, and this presentation covers it all. The presentation includes a display of WWII artifacts such as ration books, propaganda pamphlets, and a rivet gun.

Jeannette, a retired advertising professional, speaks on behalf of the Michigan Rosies, a proudly independent and Michigan-based nonprofit group dedicated to honoring the Rosies of WWII living and passed and to preserving Rosie’s legacy in Michigan and beyond.

The presentation is Friday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in room G129 in the Stanley and Blanche Ash Technology and Learning Center (Ash TLC) on ǿմý’s Greenville campus. The cost is $5 and may be paid in cash at the door.

Tore Skogseth will take the audience back to 1966 — a year that transformed rock and roll — during “1966: The Year Rock and Roll Changed Forever” on Friday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in room G129 in the Ash TLC on ǿմý’s Greenville campus. The cost is $5 and may be paid in cash at the door.

This was the moment when the Beatles and the Beach Boys pushed the boundaries of music and forever changed the sound of the genre. The Beatles’ Revolver and the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds marked a shift from pop hits to experimental, genre-defining albums.

In this presentation, we will not only explore how these two iconic bands shattered expectations, experimented with new sounds, and took rock music to places no one could have imagined, we will also explore rock and roll music before and after 1966. This isn’t just a history lesson — it’s a front-row seat.
