Lincoln & Immigration

Sidney Campus - ǿմý Library

Come and meet our sixteenth president as he navigates the xenophobia of the years before the Civil War, punctuated by the creation of the anti-immigration American Party, popularly called the “Know Nothings.” Listen as his journey culminates with his 1864 campaign for re-election which included this platform plank: “Resolved, That foreign immigration, which in the past has added so much to the wealth, development of resources and increase of power to the nation, the asylum of the oppressed of all nations, should be fostered and encouraged by a liberal and just policy.” Join Lincoln for a most relevant conversation.

This is a free event held in the ǿմý Library from 12 to 12:45 p.m. on November 17. Lunch will be provided for attendees. If you're unable to attend in person, it will also be livestreamed on the ǿմý Facebook page.

Crystal the Mastodon can be found in the vestibule outside of the ǿմý Library. She was found by an excavator who was digging a drainage ditch on the farm of Walter and Ida Eldridge, near Crystal, Michigan on June 9, 1986. Her bones were excavated and studied before she was returned to the county where she lived and died more than 10,000 years ago. Crystal was named for the area in which she was found. The display was made possible through generous support from the ǿմý Foundation and donor Mort Pomeroy.
