I used to wake up, roll over, grab my phone, and spend the next 10, 15, 20 minutes just scrolling through social media. I have recently realized that by doing that FIRST in my morning routine, I was actually sabotaging the rest of my routine. It was so hard to get out of the aimless scrolling to begin getting ready for work, I would usually feel extremely unproductive and oftentimes skip breakfast completely. That was NOT good for the rest of my day!
My ideal morning routine includes exercising, getting ready for work, and eating a nutritious breakfast. I also really like to have time in the morning to work on my journaling or my blog. The only thing social media does for me in the morning is waste my time, and cause me to compare my life to other peoples lives. It’s not important – certainly not first thing in the morning! I brainstormed a list of 10 productive things to do in the morning, that don’t involve checking my phone/social media!
Taking even 5-10 minutes to stretch, or follow along to a quick yoga video, can completely change the direction of your day! When I take time to close my eyes and stretch in the morning I feel so much more in tune with myself and it really allows me to start my day off on the right foot.
Go for a walk
I love to go for a walk first thing in the morning, especially in the summer or fall when it is cool and quiet. It’s so refreshing!
Read a book
Instead of scrolling through instagram for 10 minutes, why don’t you try and tackle that book you’ve been trying to finish?
Take a warm shower
I like to take extended showers in the morning, I can take the time to reflect on what I want my day to look like, and it allows me to wake up for the day.
Drink a glass of water/eat breakfast
There is lots of literature that says you should drink a glass of cold water first thing in the morning, and I can say from experience (and someone who used to have 2 cups of coffee before any water) that I feel a lot better after drinking a glass of water right when I wake up. Why not pair that glass of water with a healthy breakfast? Note to self, coffee is not breakfast 😉 (as much as I wish it was!)
Many of my fellow bloggers swear by journaling/morning pages first thing in the morning, it’s definitely a habit I’m wanting to implement in the near future! Check out how Shelby from Little Coffee Fox does her morning pages here.
I don’t know about you, but when I wake up I often have tons of ideas swirling around in my brain and not a good way of getting everything done. Introducing a brain dump: take a page in your bullet journal, or a scrap piece of paper, or even a word document on your computer. Set a timer for 5-10 minutes and just write everything that comes to your mind – get out all of your ideas and thoughts. Trust me – you’ll feel so much emptier and ready to take on your day!
Work on a project
I am easily more productive and motivated in the morning than I am at night. I like to wake up a bit earlier, and then set aside a bit of time to work on a current project. Whether that is working on a new blog post, creating a new printable for The Zoo, or designing a new spread in my bullet journal.
One way to wake your brain up in the morning could be doing crosswords or logic puzzles! I love to try and do a couple of logic puzzles a week, it’s really important for staying sharp and alert!
Clean Your Home
I try to take 15 minutes every morning to do a quick tidy of my house (bed made, dishes washed and away, everything picked up off the floor). It makes me a lot happier coming home after work to a home that is clean!
Those are my 10 suggestions for a more productive morning. What do you do that makes your morning routine more productive? What do you do that takes away from your productivity? Let me know below in the comments!
